AVG Anti-Virus - Why pay an annual fee to keep your anti-virus software up to date when you can use this completely free one from Grisoft. It does everything you need an anti-virus program to do and costs nothing.

1st Page 2000 - This is a great free HTML/web authoring tool from Evrsoft, and is the tool I used to create this site. It has four skill level modes ranging from 'Easy' to 'Hardcore' so just about anyone can use it to create a web page. Also, unlike most similar tools (Frontpage, etc) it doesn't add any extra junk code to your pages. I highly recommend it.

Download Accelerator Plus - This is a handy little program that can speed up your downloads significantly no matter what kind of connection you have (dialup, cable, DSL, etc). It opens up multiple connections to as many download sites as possible, so that if one connection slows down or gets bottlenecked it automatically pulls from the next one. It can also resume a download where it left off if your connection is lost. Many other download managers (like Gozilla) are "spyware", that is they spy on your web surfing habits. DAP is not spyware. It does display a small banner advertisement while you're downloading stuff (you can get rid of it by upgrading to the pay version), but it's not that intrusive and is a small price to pay for this great tool.

Ad Aware - Many web sites and programs that you download from the internet try to spy on your web surfing habits in order to target advertisements at you, usually without your knowledge. Ad Aware is a free utility that will scan your computer and show you all the cookies, programs, etc. on your system that are trying to spy on you. It displays them in a list and allows you to delete any or all of them. A handy tool if you don't want ad companies looking over your shoulder online.

TweakUI - This control panel utility from Microsoft should be included automatically with Windows but isn't. It works with all versions of Windows and allows you to customize many of its aspects. For example, you can adjust how shortcuts look, turn off window animations, and add or remove system icons from the desktop. You can also set your computer to clear out your internet history, document history, etc. on bootup. A lot of functionality packed into a small file.
